St. Etienne

Saint Etienne se trouve dans le centre de la France, à la montagne, dans le Massif Central. C’est près de Lyon.


Dans le passé, St. Etienne était une ville minière. Les mines étaient très importantes pour l’industrie et l’économie française. Pendant les années quatre-vingts il y avait un grand problème. Les mines étaient épuisées, donc elles étaient fermées et les mineurs étaient au chômage. La vie était très dure pour la ville et pour les Stéphanois. Les Stéphanois étaient très pauvres. Les industries mouraient, comme les mines.	In the past, St. Etienne was a coal mining town, and mining was a very important industry for the French economy. During the 1980s, there was a big problem, as the coal in the mines became exhausted. So they were shut down and the miners found themselves out of work. Life was hard for the town and the townsfolk who became very poor. Many buildings became derelict as businesses, shops and other industries in the town died, along with the mine.

De nos jours, la ville de Saint Etienne est toujours entourée de crassiers. Un crassier est où on met les restes d’une mine. Mais, il y a une renaissance à Saint Etienne. Les crassiers n'ont plus chauds, ils sont couverts d'arbres et de parcs.	Today, St Etienne is still surrounded by slagheaps. A slagheap is where the rubbish mined with the coal is heaped. However, the town has had a rebirth. The slag heaps are no longer warm; they are covered in trees and parks.

Il y a un très bon musée souterrain de la Mine qui raconte la vie difficile des mineurs. Tu t'habilles en casque et descends dans la mine dans une cage comme les mineurs pour faire une visite guidée dans les tunnels.	There is an excellent underground Mining Museum which shows how hard life was for the miners. You can dress like a miner, descend in the miners' cage and walk through the mine tunnels and shafts.

Tu peux voir la salle des pendus, qui servait comme vestiaire aux mineurs - les mineurs attachaient leurs affaires personelles au bout d'une chaîne, puis ils mettaient un cadenas pour les securiser. Puis ils sont partis dans la lampisterie pour chercher leurs lampes avant de descendre dans la mine. en retour, le mineur récuperait ses affaires. Ces vetements abondonnés ont un air un peu triste et sinistre.	You can see the Hall of the Hanged Men - which was used as a change room by the miners. They attached their personal belongings to the end of a long chain, hauled up to the ceiling, and padlocked for security. Then they went to the lamp room to get their lamp before going down into the pit. After work, the miner reclaimed his belongings. The suspended clothing really resembles hanged men - quite sad and spooky!

Les Stéphanois sont aussi très fiers de leur fameuse équipe de foot, qui est surnommée « les Verts » à cause de leur uniforme. Les Verts sont très forts.	Les Stéphanois are also very proud of their famous football team which is nicknamed « les Verts » or The Greens because of the colour of their strip. Les Verts are a very strong team.

St. Etienne is in the centre of France, in the Massif Central mountains. It is near Lyon.

St Etienne houses the Museum of Modern Art which is the second biggest Modern Art Museum in France next to the Pompidou Museum in Paris. There are thousands of exhibits by famous artists.

Le Musée d’Art Moderne est le second plus grand musée en France et il y a des milliers de très belles images des peintres très célèbres.

The famous architect, Courbusier, constructed many buildings in and around St Etienne.

"You have to build the town in the sunshine, you have to build it in light. You must build it in harmony with its surrounding environment. That is what directs our town planning. You must construct with dignity; that directs our architectural design. You must build simply since we are poor." Courbusier.

L'architecte célébre, Courbusier, a construit beaucoup de bâtiments à St Etienne et dans ses environs.

"Il faut bâtir la ville dans le soleil, il faut la bâtir dans la lumière. Il faut la bâtir avec la nature retrouvée autour des villes. Cela commande notre urbanisme. Il faut la construire avec dignité et cela commande notre architecture. Il faut la construire dans la simplicité puisque nous sommes pauvres" Courbusier.

En ville, il y a le tramway In town, the original tramway still exists, with trams going to the suburbs. When most other towns in France dumped their trams in the 1950s in favour of petrol run buses, Les Stéphanois kept theirs. It's a system which is fast, clean and inexpensive.

Les Stéphanois are very proud of their "classic" trams. original. Les trams vont à toutes les banlieues. C’est un système qui est rapide, propre et pas cher. Les Stéphanois sont très fiers de leurs trams « classiques ».

Saint Etienne is really a town for sports lovers, since there are skating rinks, sports stadia, gymnasiums, swimming pools and sporting centres. You can go bushwalking in the mountains, or do water sports in the Loire river. In winter, because the town is in the mountains, it's cold and snowy, so you can do cross country ski-ing. And it's important to remember that the countryside is really beautiful.

Saint Etienne est vraiment une ville pour les grands sportifs car il y a des patinoires, des stades, des gymnases, des piscines et des centres sportifs. On peut faire des randonnées à la montagne, ou des sports aquatiques à la Loire. En hiver, parce que la ville est à la montagne, il fait froid et il neige et on peut y faire du ski du fond. Et il faut se rappeler que le paysage est vraiement beau.

The "black town" has become clean and green. The dirty buildings have been cleaned, old workshops and industrial buildings renovated.

The sad, empty factories have been replaced with modern buildings. The parks in the centre of town are green and full of flowers - green spaces where you can relax and breathe freely.

La ville noire est devenue une ville propre et verte. On a nettoyé les batiments sales, renové les anciens ateliers et batiments industriels. On a remplacé les usines vides et tristes avec des bâtiments modernes. Les parcs au centre sont verts et fleuris - des espaces vertes où on peut se relaxer et respirer.
