Lyon : avec 1,6 millions d'habitants, Lyon arrive en deuxième place des plus grandes villes françaises. Ville chargée d'histoire, Lyon est un carrefour ferroviaire, routier, fluvial et aérien. C'est également un grand centre industriel et commercial.

Lyon: with 1.6 million people, Lyon comes in second place of the biggest French towns. It's a city full of history, and a hub for rail, road, river and air communications. It is also a big industrial and commercial centre.

Marseille : la cité phocéenne, comme on l'appelle, a toujours été le plus grand port français et un des plus importants de la Méditerranée. C'est la porte vers le continent africain et une ville très cosmopolitaine. Ses 1,4 millions d'habitants en font la troisième ville de France.

Marseille: known as the Phoenician city (as it was founded by them). It has always been not only the biggest French port but is also one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. It is the door to the African continent and a very cosmopolitan town. Its 1.4 million people make it the third city of France.

Lille : la quatrième plus grande ville est un axe pour les voyageurs à destination de l'Europe du Nord : à 30 minutes en train de Bruxelles et 2 heures de Londres, elle a développé une activité économique diversifiée ainsi qu'un pôle en recherche biologique, médicale et technologique (Institut Pasteur…).

Lille: the fourth largest city of France is a centre for travellers whose destination is Northern Europe. It is 30 minutes by train to Brussels, and two hours from London. Lille has developed a diversified economy as well as being a centre for biological, medical and technological research (the Pasteur Institute.)

Toulouse : siège de l'industrie aéronautique et spatiale française, Toulouse est la deuxième ville universitaire après Paris. C'est la plus grande ville du Sud-Ouest avec 900.000 habitants dans la grande agglomération. Le patrimoine culturel y est riche et c'est une ville en pleine expansion.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux avec ses 558 000 habitants, est une ville inscrite sur la liste du Patrimoine mondiale. La cité a un passé prestigieux, et c'est un métropole touristiqe et economique. La ville est connue pour son vignoble, on dit que c'est la capital mondiale du vin. C'est un pôle universitaire - un tiers de la population a moins de 25 ans.

Bordeaux with 558 000 inhabitants has World Heritage listing. The old city has a prestigious past, and is a centre for economic activity and tourism. The city is known for its wine idustry and is recognised as the world capital for wine. It has a big university and one third of the population of the city is under 25 years of age.

Strasbourg est situé au carrefour du Rhin et des routes vers l’Allemagne. D’origine allemande, elle est devenue française en 1661, puis était annexée par l’Allemagne en 1870, rendue aux Français en 1918, redevenue allemande en 1939, avant d’être libérée en 1944 ! C'est un centre industriel et connu pour les vins de la région. La belle cathédrale possède une horloge astronomique qui est fascinante. Le monument aux morts franco-allemands est souvenir du passé, et le tribunal européen est symbole du futur.

Strasbourg is located on the crossroads of the river Rhine and roads leading to Germany. Originally German, Strasbourg became French in 1661, was taken back by Germany in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, returned to France in 1918, became German once again in 1939, and eventually liberated in 1944 ! It’s an industrial centre and known for its Alsace wines. The beautiful cathedral has an old astronomical clock which is remarkable. Pause for a while by the Franco-German war memorial, and visit the European Parliament.

Grenoble: avec ses cinq cent mille d'habitants est une vieille ville de plus de deux mille ans, qui a vu des evenements importants pendant la Révolution et la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Pendant les années 60, les Jeux Olympiques d'Hiver ont boulversé la ville et encouragé le developpement. Aujourd'hui c'est un grand centre scientifique et de recherches et la capitale des Alpes.

Grenoble with its half a million people is more than two thousand years old; it played an important part in the French Revolution and World War II. During the 60s, the Olympic Winter Games encouraged the city to undertake modernisation and development. Today, it's an important centre for science and research. It is also the "capital of the Alps".
