Le Jour J
"Le Jour J" is the French expression for D Day which took place on June 6th 1944 when the Allied forces invaded Normandy at the beginning of the end of World War 2. As in English the phrase can be used for any military operation. The "J" part really stands for JOUR. Nowadays the expression LE JOUR J is commonplace in France for important events - big days. While we might save the English "D Day" for slightly unwelcome happenings such as deadlines that we need to keep, the French JOUR J is used for all sorts of special occasions. Here are some examples: Mardi est le Jour J - c'est mon anniversaire! Tuesday's the big day, it's my birthday Le Jour J approche! The big day's getting closer! |
